Les Baux de Provence

Our gites in Les Baux de Provence in holiday lets are ideally located near Les Baux de Provence. Les Baux is today mainly a tourist site before being a place to live. They are one of the most beautiful villages in France and welcome more than one and a half million visitors per year. 22 inhabitants still live in the enclosure of Les Baux, the upper part of the village and 381 inhabitants for the whole commune.

The village of Les Baux de Provence is located in the heart of the Alpilles on a rocky plateau at 245m. It overlooks exceptional landscapes over Arles, the Camargue and the Alpilles and offers breathtaking panoramas. This immense and superb stone fortress is undoubtedly one of the must-sees of Provence!

The huge underground quarries of Les Baux-de-Provence, world-famous as the setting for Jean Cocteau's "Le testament d'Orphée", were converted in 1978 into a sound and light show venue.
Representations of masterpieces are projected onto the huge walls, pillars and floors of the quarry. They transport you to colourful worlds with music. A hundred or so video projectors project images onto more than 7,000 m² of surface area. Discover the Carrières de Lumières exhibition

Saint Rémy de Provence

The village of Saint Rémy is located less than 10 km from the Domaine du Mas Foucray and its gites for holiday lets

A Roman town, a Renaissance town, a town of painters and writers, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a charming town par excellence. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is one of the oldest towns in France: remains have been found dating back to the first millennium BC. But it was under Roman imperial rule that the town really took off.

From this period, the city has preserved many vestiges and notably the site of Glanum. This ancient site is one of the most important in France, where you can still see or guess a monumental centre with its forum, a basilica and its curia.

Saint Rémy de Provence, commonly known as the "Little St Tropez of the Alpilles" is full of galleries, trendy boutiques and small restaurants typical of Provence.

Maussane les Alpilles only 3 minutes from our gites!

In the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional des Alpilles, the Vallée des Baux is home to the village of Maussane-les-Alpilles of 2,000 inhabitants.

In this touristy region, Maussane-les-Alpilles has retained its Provencal authenticity, with its olive groves, its ancient remains and its traditional festivals. This green village offers the freshness of its old fountains and wash houses.

The magic of Provence is at work here, with its procession of sunny images, the taste of olive oil and warm wines, the song of the cicadas and unmissable folklore.

Our gites less than 20 minutes from Arles

Less than 20 km from Mas Foucray is the city of Arles.

A Celtic settlement, colonised by the Greeks, Arles became Roman thanks to Caesar, who established the veterans of his legions there in 46 BC. This was the first golden age of the "little Rome of the Gauls" which was to become a great religious centre in the early days of Christianity. Ruined and bruised by the invasions of the early Middle Ages, the city was reborn in the 12th century and the splendour of its medieval monuments bears witness to the vitality and wealth of this period.

The 17th and 18th centuries saw the construction of countless private mansions which still make up the charm of the old centre, where several listed monuments are grouped together, a legacy of 2000 years of history. Since 1981, all the Roman and Romanesque monuments have been classified by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites and Arles is now a City of Art and History.

Luma Arles is a transdisciplinary cultural platform located in the Parc des Ateliers, a former industrial wasteland in the process of transformation. A centre for research, production and experimentation, Luma Arles is an ecosystem of venues and programmes where artists, thinkers, scientists and civil society actors work together to deepen understanding of issues related to creation, the environment, human rights and education.

Luma Arles includes a Resource Building, the Gehry Tower designed with architect Frank Gehry; several industrial buildings rehabilitated with Annabelle Selldorf; and a public park designed by landscape architect Bas Smets.

Come and discover the Rencontres d'Arles. Through more than forty exhibitions installed in various exceptional heritage sites in the city, the Rencontres d'Arles has been contributing to the transmission of the world's photographic heritage every summer since 1970 and has become a melting pot for contemporary creation.

Avignon - 30 minutes from our gites in Les Baux

About thirty kilometres from the Mas is the beautiful city of Avignon.

Known as the "City of the Popes" or "Altera Roma", Avignon retains the unalterable imprint of the Popes' stay in the city that was for a time the capital of the medieval West. Today, it is a radiant cultural capital with its world-renowned Theatre Festival.

Visit Avignon: the Palais des Papes and the Pont St Bénézet, classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, the Petit Palais Museum, the Angladon Museum, the Palais du Roure and the Maison Jean Vilar are all close by - Opposite Avignon, on the other bank of the Rhône, there are numerous monuments such as the Chartreuse, the Tour Philippe le Bel, the Fort and the Abbaye Saint-André

The Alpilles just a stone's throw from our gites in Les Baux de Provence

Since 13 July 2006 the Alpilles has been protected by the creation of the Alpilles Regional Nature Park.

There are very few inhabitants within this garrigue massif. However, some villages are made famous by Roman ruins and summer festivals. The Massif des Alpilles has many villages: Saint-Rémy-de-Provence on the northern slope, Les Baux-de-Provence to the south, a museum and a Romanesque chapel at Eygalières to the northeast. The Alphonse Daudet museum is located in Fontvieille in the reconstruction of the famous mill, on a prominence linked to the massif, on the road to Arles.

Various other museums including a santon museum. Not forgetting Maussane, Mouriès, or Aureille. All these villages have kept their authenticity, where you can take the time to live and stroll.

You can go hiking from our gites, the Alpilles being only a few minutes away

The Camargue

The Mas Foucray is close to the Camargue National Reserve, and one hour from Saintes Maries de la Mer.

The Camargue is a site of major national importance for local birds, for migrants and particularly for winterers, since in 2000-2005 it was the leading French site in terms of the number of winterers welcomed each year (122,000 birds, ahead of the Bassin d'Arcachon, which welcomes 105,000).

The Camargue is also known as the home of the pink flamingo. In 1928 the botanical and zoological reserve was created. The manadiers are committed to promoting the Camargue horse breed and the AOC bull. Rice growing is an integral part of Camargue agriculture.

Among the most famous sites are Le Grau du Roi, Aigues-Mortes and of course Les Saintes Maries de la Mer, not forgetting the magnificent fine sandy beaches

The Pont du Gard

About forty kilometres from Le Mas is one of the masterpieces of Roman architecture, the Pont du Gard, admirably integrated into a natural site that has retained its wild charm. The Pont du Gard fascinates every visitor with its elegance and majesty.

Two millennia after its construction, this ancient building is still a true masterpiece, as much for its technical prowess as for its simple beauty. It spans the Gardon river and ensures the continuity of the Roman aqueduct that carried water from Uzès to Nîmes.

This monument has been a World Heritage Site since 1985. It attracts 1.5 million visitors per year, and is the second most visited provincial monument after Mont-Saint-Michel.

The Luberon

Mas Foucray and its gites in Les Baux de Provence are just 1 hour's drive from the village of Gordes in the Lubéron. Gordes is a magnificent hilltop village built into the rock.

You will discover the splendour of the village as you stroll through its narrow streets. The village of Gordes is classified, just like Lourmarin, Ménerbes and Roussillon, as one of the most beautiful villages in France.

The Luberon, a mythical country both green and wild with the Luberon Regional Natural Park, its hills, its famous vineyards and its many villages steeped in history.
